Chinese prosecutors plan to confiscate 61,800 $BTC seized by the UK. How this massive trove of coins “hanging over the market” will be handled is more worth watching than the price itself.

According to CoinDesk, the Tianjin No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court has accepted prosecutors’ application to recover assets related to the case against Qian Moumou as proceeds of crime. The alleged fraud totaled about $5.7 billion, affecting more than 102,000 investors. The court has opened a six-month period for interested parties to file claims. Previously, the UK High Court ruled that Chinese law should apply to victims’ claims to the Bitcoin.

Why it matters: 61,800 BTC is comparable to a sizable national-level holding. The ultimate outcome—whether the Bitcoin is used to compensate victims, sold, or held—will directly affect market expectations of potential selling pressure. How the assets will be handled has not yet been determined.

What to watch next: 1) Further hearings in the UK and victims’ appeals; 2) developments during the six-month claims period; 3) whether the associated addresses show any on-chain transfers.
