🤖 Your AI assistant can now open and close futures positions for you

Coinbase Developer Platform (@CoinbaseDev) confirmed on October 21 that index perpetuals and crypto perpetuals are now available on Coinbase for Agents. That means your AI agent can place perpetuals orders directly.

The story behind this feature is even more interesting 👇
🔹 While using the platform, one user’s AI agent requested the feature through the /feedback function
🔹 An agent on Coinbase’s side received the feedback and automatically turned it into an actionable code PR
🔹 The team reviewed and approved it, then pushed the update
Coinbase says the whole process took five minutes.

AI makes the request, AI writes the code, and humans just click “Approve.” Product iteration really has reached another level of speed.

But I’m more concerned about the user’s side of things.

With spot trading, a bad call can cost you your principal. Add leverage to a perpetual, and one wrong move could liquidate you. AI agents don’t feel fear or hesitate. That’s both an advantage and a risk: misunderstand one thing you say, or get thrown off by a malicious prompt, and the agent can place an order much faster than you can react.

If I were going to let an agent trade perpetuals, I’d set a few ground rules:
🔹 Give it a separate account with a small balance; leave my main account untouched
🔹 Set hard limits in advance for leverage, position size, and daily losses
🔹 Require manual approval before opening a position, at least at first
🔹 Review its trade history regularly instead of looking only at the returns chart

Tools are getting smarter, but risk management is still on us.

Would you trust an AI agent with your futures account? How much access would you give it? Let’s talk in the comments 👇
