Why do #bitcoiners claim that “Bitcoin is not crypto”?

🧱 1. What the White Paper Says (Satoshi, 2008)

The foundational document is titled:

“Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System”

(Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System)

🔹 In its 9 pages, it never mentions the words “crypto,” “cryptocurrency,” or “blockchain.”

🔹 What it does mention is “digital signatures,” “proof-of-work,” “timestamp server,” “network,” “nodes,” and “hashing.”

👉 Bitcoin presents itself as a form of decentralized digital money, not as a technological or investment category.

Satoshi wasn’t inventing “a crypto”; they were solving the double-spending problem for electronic money without trust.

🔐 2. Why was it later called cryptocurrency?

Years later, journalists, economists, and then popular exchanges began using the term “cryptocurrency” to classify any digital asset based on cryptography that was used as money or a token.

And technically, Bitcoin does use cryptography for:

Digital signatures (ECDSA → to guarantee ownership).

SHA-256 hashes (security and immutability).

Proof of work (consensus security).

That’s why, in a technical or academic sense, Bitcoin is a “cryptocurrency,” because it meets the criteria:

1. It uses cryptography.

2. It operates on a decentralized network.

3. It represents value that can be transferred digitally.

🦁 3. So why do Bitcoiners say “Bitcoin is not crypto”?

They don’t say it because it’s technically false, but as an #ideological distinction and a matter of #design purity:

Bitcoin is decentralized, open, and has no founders or corporate control.

In modern practice, “crypto” is associated with:

- Inflationary tokens.

- Centralized projects.

- Pump-and-dump schemes.

- Opaque smart contracts.

- ICOs, NFTs, etc.

In other words, “crypto” has become a speculative ecosystem, while Bitcoin holds on to its original vision:

censorship-resistant, apolitical, and free money.

That’s why we say:

“Bitcoin is not crypto”

not as a technical claim, but as a moral and philosophical defense of the original project.

4. Conclusion: Who is right?

Academic / technical

✅ Yes. Bitcoin uses cryptography and is a cryptocurrency by functional definition.

Bitcoiner / philosophical

✅ Yes (in a deeper sense). Bitcoin is unique; it doesn’t belong to today’s “crypto” ecosystem, which is full of intermediaries, fraud, and empty promises.

Journalistic / commercial

⚠️ Partially. By lumping everything together under “crypto,” they dilute the concept of Bitcoin as a monetary innovation.

In summary

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency,

but it isn’t part of the “crypto” world as we understand it today.

It’s the root, not the branch.

It’s the original protocol, not the casino that came afterward.

Is that clear? 👇🏻
