Tesla and SpaceX are studying a merger that could bring together 30,221 bitcoins in a single company, according to Elon Musk. At the current price, those holdings are worth around US$ 2.5 billion.
The total includes 18,712 BTC from SpaceX and 11,509 BTC from Tesla, according to data from BitcoinTreasuries. Together, the two companies would form one of the largest corporate Bitcoin reserves in the world.
Musk said special committees made up of independent directors had been formed to review the proposal. Even so, he made it clear that nothing has been finalized yet. "Do I think it would be a good idea? Yes. But, at the end of the day, the shareholders need to support it," he said.
The billionaire also emphasized that he cannot participate directly in the discussions, since he holds significant stakes in both companies. According to documents cited by CoinDesk, he owns about 36% of SpaceX and 19.8% of Tesla, including stock-based compensation instruments.
The potential merger would draw attention because of the size and diversity of the businesses involved, which range from electric vehicles and rockets to satellites, AI, and robotics. According to estimates by the international press, the combined company could be worth more than US$ 3.5 trillion.
Despite the interest, Musk acknowledged that the committees have not yet reached a consensus on the terms. The deal would also require shareholder approval and could face regulatory scrutiny.
Both companies have a history with Bitcoin. Tesla bought US$ 1.5 billion worth of BTC in 2021, sold some of its holdings in 2022, and still retains a portion of the asset. SpaceX has also been accumulating bitcoins for years, although it discloses
