All three major indexes rose today, but for a different reason than yesterday. Yesterday, the S&P 500 rose 0.4%, while the equal-weight S&P 500 fell 0.3%; only AI stocks gained. Today, the S&P 500 rose 0.7%, the equal-weight index gained 1.2%, small caps rose 1.9%, and the Nasdaq gained just 0.5%.

On Binance, $SPYB corresponds to the S&P 500, and $QQQB to the Nasdaq. September housing starts came in at 1.221 million, down 5.2% month over month—a four-month low and below every forecast. The 10-year Treasury yield eased from 5.14% to 5.11%.

The most counterintuitive thing was the ranking: health care led with a 2.27% gain, and real estate came second, up 1.79%. Both benefit from lower rates. Homebuilder confidence was 29, a 14-year low, and the 30-year mortgage rate was 7.40%, its highest in three years—yet the sector led the way. The worse the data, the more people are betting that rates have peaked. Brent fell from 110 to 109, making energy the only sector to decline. Earnings provided support for the indexes: 3M rose 6.1%, and Northrop Grumman gained 6.0%.

When rates ease, these sectors move first. Tomorrow night, Meta and Tesla report earnings, and traders are betting on whether $METAB can bring back investor enthusiasm. AI valuations can’t outweigh interest rates, so the rotation still has further to go.

This is not investment advice.
