Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade to activate on the Hoodi testnet next week; mainnet launch date TBD

October 20 — According to an official blog post published by the Ethereum Foundation on October 16, the Glamsterdam upgrade will activate on the Hoodi testnet on October 26 (October 27 Beijing time).

The Hoodi testnet upgrade adjusts the gas costs of state-creating operations and relaxes the contract deployment size limit, raising the block gas limit to 200 million.

Glamsterdam is one of Ethereum’s largest protocol upgrades since the Merge. Its key changes include protocol-level proposer-builder separation (ePBS, EIP-7732), block-level access lists (BAL, EIP-7928), and adjustments to gas accounting.

With ePBS, block-building and proposing responsibilities are built into the underlying protocol. BAL, meanwhile, provides a basis for nodes to process transactions in parallel by declaring in advance which state locations transactions will access. Together, the two changes support the goal of raising the gas limit from around 60 million to 200 million.

The Ethereum Foundation reminded node operators to update their execution- and consensus-layer clients before activation on Hoodi. Several client teams have already released compatible versions.

The date for the Ethereum mainnet upgrade has not yet been set; the team is waiting for the results of testing on Hoodi. Regular Ethereum mainnet users and ETH holders do not need to take any action at this stage.
