Bitcoin: Funds cut their net short position on CME by 14.7%

The Square trend has specific dates: the CFTC’s weekly TFF report covers positions as of October 13, 2026, and was published on October 16. It does not show what funds are doing in real time.

Combining CME standard and Micro Bitcoin futures, the “leveraged funds” category went from a net short position equivalent to about 35,903 BTC on October 6 to 30,611 BTC on October 13. Calculated using the unrounded figures, that’s a 14.74% reduction.

To compare the two contracts, they must be weighted: the standard contract represents 5 BTC and the Micro, 0.1 BTC. This calculation uses the futures-only series, excludes options, and does not include other contracts or markets.

“Net short” means that, in aggregate, short positions exceed long positions. The reduction measures how that difference changed; it does not equal spot bitcoin purchases or an identical decline in total short positions.

The category includes hedge funds and other money managers. The CFTC classifies participants by their primary activity, but does not identify the intent behind each trade: positions may also reflect hedging or arbitrage. The report alone does not support the claim that everyone is betting on a price decline.

Market read: the adjustment describes lower net short exposure in those two series, which remains negative. The reporting lag and possible hedging limit its usefulness for anticipating prices; it also does not confirm a general shift in sentiment.
