10/20: When you wake up, check leverage first—not the news.

Last night, someone shorted 13,830 ETH at 2,366. This morning, 2,765 were liquidated, leaving 11,061 with a liquidation price of 2,419—just $9 from the current price. On the BTC side, a $110-million-plus long had a stop-loss at 80,500. The overnight low was 80,684, missing it by just $184. The trader cut the loss manually at 80,949, losing $3.26 million, then turned around and opened a $45.8-million long in US stocks.

With setups like this—“one small move away from setting things off”—once direction is confirmed, slippage can be much worse than expected.

US stocks lean bearish, but they’re hard to short: QQQ could first rebound to 725–729, then fall 8% to 670 if that fails. SMH has dropped for nine straight days and is stuck around 530–540.

Macro signals are diverging. China’s CSI 300 has fallen for 10 straight weeks, a near-decade record, while Q3 GDP came in at 4.5%, above expectations, and the September trade surplus hit a record $133.5 billion for a single month. Good data and a weak market don’t automatically converge.

The compute-capacity narrative saw its sharpest clash today: SemiAnalysis says 51 GW of new capacity will be added in 2027 alone, with $1.36 trillion in leases already signed. On the same day, Microsoft backed out of its lease with Nscale because of insufficient power, and Anthropic’s valuation was cut from $2 trillion to $1.5 trillion. Long-term contracts on the demand side, delivery failures on the supply side—both can be true at once. Being bullish on the sector and bearish on a highly leveraged single name aren’t contradictory.

Three security developments: an Argent-style wallet exploit using “time warp + replay” drained $59,800; DarkSword-PROV2 fully reconstructed an iOS attack chain, including the consolidation of wallet funds; and Qubic used Math.random() to generate a seed, emptying 1,404 wallets of 2.94 trillion QU. Both phones and smart contracts are being systematically tested.

I’ve come around to the idea that altcoins have no fresh inflows after seeing two rounds of it: even blue chips like UNI and AAVE have posted lower highs in both rounds, making them suitable only for swing trades. My core positions remain in crypto stocks: COIN, HOOD, CRCL.

Two things to watch today: whether the ETH liquidation band at 2,409–2,419 gets cleared; and how SPCX explains the accounting treatment of Musk’s $10.7 billion stock gift in Tuesday night’s earnings.
