There was someone in the group who used to buy and resell Hong Kong goods over in Buji. He’d travel back and forth with a little suitcase, packing a whole case full of baby formula and cosmetics. Thin guy, loud voice. He’d been trading crypto for over three years, always just dabbling—put in a few thousand, take out a few thousand.

One night in late November last year, after watching the market all day, he saw Ethereum pull back to a level he’d marked out long ago. It was past one in the morning. He told me his hand was on the mouse, moving back and forth, while he kept deleting and retyping the number in the buy box on his screen. In the end, he gritted his teeth and, with a trembling hand, added one extra zero to the order he’d originally planned to place for 30,000 yuan.

The second he clicked, he regretted it. He stared blankly at the execution confirmation for ages, then cursed himself and said he was done for—if it dropped another 10 percent, he’d have to cut his losses and take the hit.

But the next day, the market didn’t fall. Instead, a big green candle sent it climbing. He didn’t dare get greedy. After making a decent profit, he sold most of it in batches and held on to the rest. That money let him pay off the renovation bill he owed back in his hometown in one go, and replace the secondhand car he’d been driving for eight years.

Later, he told me that even now, when he thinks about the finger that clicked that night, it still feels numb. But recently he added the rest of that half-position back in, saying he wasn’t sure whether it would bring him luck or trouble this time.

Have any of you ever had one of those moments where a single click changed everything?
