Zcash and Sprout: what NU7 would block and what remains unresolved
Sprout, Zcash’s first privacy system, is among Square’s current trending topics. ZIP 2003 proposes invalidating all version 4 transactions starting with NU7. Sprout can only spend using that format: funds that remain there would have no compatible way to be spent after activation.
The scope also includes transparent or Sapling transactions created in v4. Formats v5 and v6 would continue to be supported, but they do not allow spending from Sprout. That is why both wallet compatibility and each user’s balance matter so much.
ZIP 2003 is listed as a draft and was created on October 31, 2024. When ZIP 259 was checked on October 19, 2026, the mainnet activation height was still pending, with a definition expected on the 20th. The news currently circulating does not prove that the restriction is already in effect.
Sprout funds would remain accounted for as issued: the proposal does not burn them. It leaves open the possibility of recovery through another consensus change, but warns that spending may never be restored. Keeping the keys would not, by itself, resolve a protocol-level restriction.
There is also a privacy cost: moving value out of Sprout makes the amount moved visible in the public accounting of the pools. Timing and amounts may make correlations easier. The final schedule and software support are important considerations for anyone still using this system.
Market, 06:09 UTC: ZEC was trading at 1,162.98 USDT (+2.923% in 24 h); BTC, as a general benchmark, was at 82,781.29 USDT (+1.288%). This change does not prove that the market has resolved NU7’s operational risks, nor does it allow the price movement to be attributed to the proposal.
