First the midnight breakdown, then a V-shaped recovery—the real judge is the U.S. market open tonight at 21:30

Here’s where I stand: Between 03:00 and 04:00, $BTC plunged to a low of 80,684, breaking straight through the double bottom at 80,800 we discussed yesterday. $ETH was even harsher, hitting a low of 2,329. But it was the wick that broke, not the close: the 4-hour candle at 04:00 closed back at 82,116 on rising volume (spot trading was about $215 million, roughly 1.7 times the previous candle). This morning, two independent sources confirmed 82,398, up 1.00% over 24 hours, with a high of 82,544 and a low of 80,684. ETH recovered to 2,417, up 0.47% over 24 hours. I think this was a false breakdown that swept stop-losses, but we’re only at halftime—which side are you on: is the V-shaped recovery real, or should we wait for the U.S. market to knock it back tonight?

Why call it halftime? On Friday, the Nasdaq fell 2.15%, its worst week since June. AI stocks took another leg down over the weekend on tokenized perpetuals (media reports citing CoinGlass: about $51.6 million in leveraged chip-stock positions were liquidated in roughly 10 minutes). Crypto’s weekend selloff and bounce may simply have been an early move. How the Nasdaq and oil prices perform when U.S. markets actually open tonight will determine whether this V is a reversal or just a dead-cat bounce.

Leverage looks relatively clean: according to OKX, funding rates are about +0.0064% for BTC and +0.0087% for ETH, both in neutral territory, with no crowded positioning on either side. Open interest is about $2.48 billion for BTC and $1.40 billion for ETH. I couldn’t find a reliable figure for total liquidations this morning, so I won’t pad this out with stale numbers.

Keep an eye on two times today: 10:00, when China’s third-quarter GDP and other data are released; and 21:30, the U.S. market open. Only closing prices count: talk about a continued recovery only if price holds above 82,544. If a 4-hour candle closes back below 80,684, the false-breakdown thesis is invalidated—treat it as a genuine breakdown.

This is just my personal market commentary and does not guarantee returns. Volatility may increase around Monday’s open, so manage your own position size.

Choose one: After the U.S. market opens tonight, will BTC hold above 82,544 and recover further, or get dragged back below 81,000 and grind lower?
