On the evening of October 21, Solana’s TPS might “crash” right before your eyes—don’t panic.
At around 22:50 that night, Alpenglow is set to activate on mainnet. It’s the biggest consensus upgrade in Solana’s history, 18 months in the making.
The change is to voting: right now, every vote has to go on-chain, and a transaction takes 12.8 seconds to become final. After the upgrade, voting moves off-chain, cutting finality down to 150 milliseconds.
Here’s the catch: vote transactions have long taken up more than half of each block. Once they’re moved off-chain, the TPS reported to the public will “shrink” significantly. But that’s just the inflated numbers being stripped away—the capacity actually available for DeFi will increase.
Validators have approved it by a wide margin, the testnet is running smoothly, and regular users don’t need to do a thing.
But the price action is interesting: SOL is down 13% in two weeks, hovering around $104. It’s held above $100 twice this week, and the market seems to be treating the upgrade like it doesn’t matter.
I think there’s a disconnect in expectations here: the upgrade is genuinely bullish. If it activates smoothly on the 21st, a catch-up rally seems more likely than a sell-off.
After the 21st, do you think SOL will catch up—or keep playing dead?
