Trump’s executive order imposed 500% tariffs and granted exemptions in the very same document. The bureaucracy has finally learned how to “save time.”
The executive order issued on October 16 imposed 500% tariffs on Russian goods under Section 2, and 100% tariffs on goods from the five countries or regions that import the most oil and gas from Russia. Section 4, however, exempted them from these new tariffs. Previous sanctions against Russia remain in effect.
In theory, these tariffs could affect all kinds of goods exported to the U.S., spreading the energy dispute across global supply chains.
The exemption has no fixed expiration date and will remain in effect unless the government decides otherwise. The “up to 60 days” mentioned by Rubio refers to the review period, not a deadline for tariffs to automatically resume.
Exporters have been given some breathing room, while Washington has kept a tariff threat in reserve that it can revive at any time. At least one direct route to a new round of trade shocks has been blocked.
For Bitcoin $BTC , the potential bullish case is that easing energy pressures could cool inflation and push yields lower. Of course, these transmission channels still need to be confirmed by subsequent data.
When markets reopen, I’ll be watching diesel prices and U.S. Treasury yields closely. A politician’s signature may cancel tariffs, but it can’t make inflation disappear out of thin air.
