Vitalik Buterin posted a cost breakdown on Oct 17 that puts the all-in cost of mining one bitcoin at about $93,700. Bitcoin trades near $81,400 tonight.

His table splits that per coin: hardware about $37,600 including financing, electricity into the machines $40,600, other power $2,400, labor $3,200, facility rent about $2,500, and about $7,400 for maintenance, insurance, tax and bandwidth. He posted it to compare with AI inference, where hardware is about 76% of the cost and power only 4%.

We ran his numbers against the price. Everything except the machines and the building comes to $53,600 per coin, so today's price still covers the running bill with about $27,800 left over. Hardware and rent need $40,100. That leaves each new coin about $12,300 short of full cost, roughly 13%.

These are his estimates, and every miner pays a different power price. By his table, mining at $81,400 pays the bills but doesn't pay back the rigs.
