The market broadly fell, but this token bucked the trend, surged on volume, and closed above 0.062: the $SAND short squeeze with a -0.49% funding rate

Let me state my view first: it got rejected three times this afternoon, but I’m calling this close a “short squeeze that’s still alive.” Which side are you on—the more shorts pile in, the higher it goes, or does a market-wide slump send it back to 0.059?

Here are the hard numbers:
$SAND climbed in steps today from a low of 0.0536. It was rejected each time it pushed into the 0.059–0.0607 range at 15:00, 17:00, and 18:00. But the 19:00 candle was different: hourly volume was about 1.7 million USDT, the largest of the day, and it closed at 0.06196—the first close above the afternoon ceiling. At 20:00, it touched a new intraday high of 0.063. Just before publication, spot was around 0.0619 (consistent at 0.0618–0.0619 across Binance, KuCoin, and Gate), up about 12.1% over 24 hours, with spot 24-hour trading volume at around 9.24 million USDT. Meanwhile, $BTC was around 81,500 and down about 1% over 24 hours. The market was broadly falling, so this relative strength is real.

Why is it rising? I couldn’t find a clear new catalyst today. The rally after South Korean exchanges lifted their trading warnings in early October had already run its course and pulled back. This move looks more like a combination of a volume surge without news and short covering. For now, let the price action and funding rate speak for themselves—don’t force a narrative.

Crowding is the key point here: OKX perpetual funding is around -0.49%, an extreme negative reading; perpetuals are trading at about a 1.5% discount to spot; and open interest is around $6.79 million. In plain English: the higher the price goes, the more shorts pile in, leaving plenty of fuel for a squeeze. But extreme funding is always a double-edged sword: a genuine squeeze can accelerate the move, but if sentiment fades, the pullback can be fast and deep, catching both longs and shorts.

From here, I’m only watching the closes: if the 1h candle closes back below 0.059, treat this move as a fakeout and don’t get attached. If it holds above 0.063, then watch 0.065–0.068—the overhead supply zone left by the early-October rally and reversal. If the broader market’s selloff accelerates, this countertrend token could be the first to catch up on the downside. That takes priority over every other view.

This is for informational purposes only and is not investment advice. Use 1h closes to judge key levels, and manage your own position size.

Pick one: does the short squeeze stay alive and reach 0.065 first, or does it reverse and fall back to 0.059?
