Mysten Labs announces new CEO and artificial intelligence unit
In a letter published on October 16, 2026, Evan Cheng announced that Kevin Boon, until now president of Mysten Labs, had agreed to take on the role of CEO. Cheng will remain chief technology officer and lead the new AI unit. The letter does not specify an effective date other than the date of the announcement.
Boon was already part of the team: his appointment as president was announced on January 9, 2025, after he had served in legal roles. The leadership change applies to Mysten Labs, the company.
The reorganization formalizes a unit dedicated to trusted products for AI agents and infrastructure for these applications. It will have its own engineering, product development, and other functions to reduce internal dependencies.
The stated goal is for agents to operate within limits set by their users and to perform autonomous tasks with safeguards. Cheng says the planned products and services will be built on Sui and Walrus.
This is a development direction. The announcement does not, by itself, demonstrate commercial adoption, revenue, or the security of all products. Execution, integration, and agent failure risks remain; monitoring requires verifiable results.
Market snapshot: at 05:54 UTC on 10/17, Binance Spot showed SUI at 1.0106 USDT (-2.90% over 24 hours) and WAL at 0.04280 USDT (-12.40%). These are changes over a rolling window, not an isolated measure of the appointment's effect. The leadership change also does not allow us to infer additional token demand or predict their prices.
