The textbook says “unlock = dump,” but $ARB isn’t buying it today.
At 8 p.m. Beijing time tonight, 92.65 million ARB will be unlocked on schedule—about 1.56% of the circulating supply, worth roughly $18.48 million at the current price. The recipients are the team and future team members + advisors, making this a classic “insider vesting” unlock. According to the script, the price should go down.
Instead, the price climbed from around $0.18 to nearly $0.20, up 5% to 15% over 24 hours (figures vary across platforms due to differences in calculation methods and timestamps).
Why didn’t it fall? I see three reasons:
1) Expectations were already priced in. ARB unlocks are scheduled for the 16th of every month, and the market knows this routine all too well. Expectations of selling pressure had already been absorbed;
2) Fundamentals provided a counterweight. Just yesterday, Arbitrum announced a USDG stablecoin growth program: a 2 million ARB reward pool, with 200,000 ARB each for the first 10 teams to bring USDG TVL to $10 million. The ecosystem narrative is heating up;
3) Capital is flowing in. CoinStats, citing Artemis data, reported that Arbitrum saw net inflows of $205 million in the week ending October 14—the highest among major public blockchains.
My take: an unlock has never automatically meant a dump. The key is to look at three things: who’s receiving the tokens (team vesting or investors selling), whether the market has priced it in ahead of time, and whether there are positive fundamentals to offset it. This time, all three are in the bulls’ favor, so the “unlocks always mean a drop” script naturally failed to play out. Tokenomist’s historical data also shows that ARB’s price hasn’t moved much in the seven days following its past few unlocks.
But don’t get carried away: the unlocked tokens do enter circulation, and in theory, team allocations can be transferred to the market at any time. The $0.20–$0.25 range is a previous zone of heavy bag-holding, so think carefully about what you’re betting on before chasing the price.
