Cars can fly now, but delivery still means waiting. Musk put “miles ahead” and “still a long way off” in the same presentation.
Today’s Roadster demo was truly jaw-dropping: it climbed a curved ramp, drove upside down, then briefly lifted off and flipped in midair. Tesla says the car used an adhesion system and SpaceX cold-gas thrusters.
But if you count the years people who started waiting in 2017 have been waiting, it’s a complicated feeling.
Back then, delivery was promised for 2020. Now the mass-production target is 2028. After the presentation, the reservation page listed a $50,000 deposit for the Performance version and $250,000 for the Thrust version—and note, the deposit isn’t the final price of the car.
But X was awash with excitement. Someone had actually managed to get a car off the ground, and the engineers deserve applause. That’s also the commercial value of this presentation: making people want to pay attention to Tesla again. A demo crazy enough can bring the brand back into the spotlight and draw attention to its other products.
As for shareholder $TSLA , what they got today was a new reason to hope. Mass production, street legality, and delivery to customers still have to be delivered on, one by one.
