$1.45B IN SHORTS, AND THE MARKET'S BIGGEST "BEAR" ISN'T BEARISH ๐
Abraxas Capital's two hedging accounts on Hyperliquid have crossed $331M in total profit while holding over $1.45 billion in short positions, per @lookonchain. That is the largest visible short book in crypto right now.
Before you read it as smart money calling a top, look at the plumbing. Roughly a week ago these same wallets were ~$114M underwater while $BTC pressed toward $85K, and they didn't flinch. Abraxas runs a market-neutral arbitrage fund (Elysium Global Arbitrage Fund, $4B+ AUM). Most of this book is a funding-carry trade: it sits close to neutral on price and collects the hourly rent that crowded longs pay while markets melt up. The "bear" is the landlord.
And the rent right now is serious. On Hyperliquid today: BLUR funding at -438% annualized, MELANIA -149%, MINA -105%. On OKX: BLUR -252%, RSR -104%. When funding goes that negative, shorts get paid handsomely just for sitting still.
โก WHY THIS MATTERS
This shows exactly who stands on the other side of crypto's perpetual bid. One fund can warehouse $1.45B of hedged shorts on-chain, fully visible, in real time, bigger than most exchanges' entire perp books. Retail leverage is fighting professionals who get paid whether price goes up or down. The squeeze risk cuts both ways: a hard $BTC breakout (currently ~$82,300) would bleed this book, while endless crowded longs just keep paying the rent.
Second-order effect: institutional hedging now lives on on-chain perps, not just CME. Every adjustment this book makes shows up on Hyperliquid's public tape hours before it hits any headline. Watching the landlord's positions has become its own leading indicator.
Fade him, or follow him? ๐
