$ETH The data is out, and it’s bearish across the board!

A few quick thoughts: PPI has usually come out before CPI, but this time it came out after CPI.

Both the monthly and annual rates were far higher than expected. CPI was bearish first, and now PPI is bearish too, raising expectations of higher prices down the road!

My take is this: PPI is the Producer Price Index. When PPI rises, production costs go up, and those costs inevitably get passed on to consumers. Today’s monthly retail sales figure showed no sign of cooling consumer spending—in fact, it came in at 0.8%. That means consumers’ willingness and ability to spend remain strong, even with prices high.

So the conclusion is: production costs, as measured by PPI, plus consumers’ spending power are both pushing inflation higher. Retail sales measure total consumer spending (excluding food services; other services are not included).

Initial jobless claims also showed no sign of a weakening labor market, adding another piece of hawkish evidence!

All three of today’s data points—PPI, monthly retail sales, and initial jobless claims—were bearish.
