PPI blew up, and it looks even worse than CPI
Just released (Beijing time 20:30): U.S. September PPI rose +1.3% month over month, versus expectations of just +0.6%—more than double; year over year, it was +6.3%, versus expectations of +5.5%. This is the biggest monthly increase since March 2022. Breaking it down, energy is driving the whole thing: energy +10.8%, gasoline +20.3%.
Yesterday's CPI already came in hotter than expected, and today's PPI adds another blow—upstream costs haven't come down either. This is exactly the combination the market fears most: inflation stays sticky, and the Fed can't ease even if it wants to.
The market reaction was surprisingly restrained: $BTC was around 80,925 before the data, plunged to 80,582 in 3 minutes, then bounced back not long after. I just cross-checked (20:40, two sources): 81,039, 24h -2.18%; today's low of 80,226 hasn't been breached. $ETH 2,362, 24h -5.00%, still noticeably weaker than BTC.
My take: 80,000 is now the line between bulls and bears. If it holds and price stabilizes above 81,000, that means this bearish news has been absorbed for now; if the 1-hour candle really closes below 80,000, the liquidation zone below will get tested again. Don't try to catch the fall.
Risk warning: Volatility is highest during the first hour after the data. Don't chase trades; keep positions small and wait for the close to confirm.
