CPI at 3.7% just surprised to the downside. If PPI comes in hotter than expected at 8:30 p.m. tonight, can BTC hold the $80K level?
Yesterday’s CPI came in hotter than expected, sending BTC briefly down to 80,226 before it recovered to around 81,300 at the close. ETH fell in tandem to around 2,410. Tonight it’s PPI’s turn: Bloomberg’s consensus is 0.5% month over month, a WSJ survey puts it at 0.6%, and RBC is even forecasting 0.9%. If it beats expectations again, the probability of a rate hike by the end of October—which CME puts at 49%—could climb further, putting even more pressure on the $80K level.
On nights like this, I don’t try to guess the direction. I do just one thing: set up spot conditional orders in advance.
How to set a spot “Take Profit/Stop Loss” order in the Binance app in 3 steps (I verified the steps against the official documentation):
1️⃣ On the trading page, select BTC/USDT or ETH/USDT, tap the small arrow next to Buy/Sell, then select “Take Profit/Stop Loss” from the dropdown.
2️⃣ Enter three numbers: the trigger price (for example, the $80,000 level for BTC), the limit price (the price you want your order to execute at once triggered), and the quantity.
3️⃣ Tap “Buy/Sell BTC” → confirm a second time → order placed successfully. The minimum order amount is 5 USDT. A successfully placed order doesn’t mean it has been filled; the price still has to reach the trigger level.
Two details to keep in mind: Don’t set the trigger price and limit price to the same number. During extreme volatility, a price gap could mean your limit order doesn’t get filled. If you want protection against moves in either direction, use an OCO order (choose between a limit order and a take-profit/stop-loss order; triggering one automatically cancels the other).
Why you should set one up tonight: On the day CPI was released yesterday, nearly $1 billion in positions were liquidated across the market in 24 hours. ETH liquidations totaled $286 million, surpassing BTC’s $197 million—how many people were running on leverage with no protection while waiting for the data? Tonight brings PPI, retail sales, and initial jobless claims back-to-back, so volatility could be even higher. The point of a conditional order is to turn “I’m out if it breaks below this level” into an automated action, instead of nervously watching the charts in the middle of the night. Placing an order doesn’t cost you money; not placing one on a data night could cost you a lot.
