Standard Chartered pushed its timeline for stablecoins to reach $2 trillion back by two years, to 2030.
My first reaction wasn’t bearish—in fact, I think this sounds more realistic.
The total stablecoin market cap is now around $309 billion.
It hasn’t grown much,
but the frequency of transactions is rising.
Put simply, there’s no more money, but it’s being used more often.
Before, everyone competed over who could issue the most.
Now it’s about who can actually get their stablecoins used for payments, settlements, and AI agent transactions.
$USDT is backed by savings in emerging markets.
$USDC is backed by payments in developed markets.
They’re playing completely different games.
Here’s what I care more about: how reserve income is shared may be the key to winning market share in the next round.
Why would users leave their money with you, earning nothing?
If issuers pocket all the interest and users get none, I really wonder how long this model can last 🤔
So reaching $2 trillion two years later isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Less bubble, more real volume in payments and settlements.
That’s the kind of growth I’m more willing to believe in.
Do the stablecoins you hold usually just sit there, or do you actually use them for payments and cash flow?
