Bitcoin ETFs saw $150 million pulled out in a single day, while not one of the ten Ethereum ETFs saw any inflows 🦖

U.S. September CPI rose 3.7% year over year, up from 3.4% in August and above market expectations. Core CPI climbed to 2.6%. As soon as the data came out, markets immediately repriced the odds of a Fed rate hike in October. The CME FedWatch tool showed the probability briefly surging from around 22% before the release to nearly 47%, before falling back to 26%. Risk assets retreated across the board.

Bitcoin fell below $81,000, briefly testing the $80,000 mark during Asian trading hours, and was down more than 2% over 24 hours. Ethereum fell to $2,357, while XRP and SOL dropped 3.5% to 4%. South Korea’s KOSPI plunged 8% intraday, triggering a circuit breaker, and the Nikkei 225 fell 5% 💥

The institutional flows are what’s really worth watching. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of $150.5 million on October 14, wiping out all of the $175.7 million in inflows from the previous day. Spot Ethereum ETFs saw $130 million in net outflows yesterday, with none of the ten products recording a net inflow. Demand is clearly weakening ??

My view is that ETF inflows have been the engine behind this rally. Once the engine stalls, the gap in spot buying becomes immediately apparent. Leverage can prop up prices for a while, but it can’t drive them to new highs. Institutions aren’t necessarily turning bearish; they’re stepping aside to avoid uncertainty around the data. Every upcoming inflation and employment report will be scrutinized more intensely by the market. No one wants to be fully invested before the results come in ⚖️

Another way to look at it: a single day of outflows doesn’t have to signal a trend. Around the last few data releases, funds first moved to the sidelines and then returned. The key is whether ETFs buy back the money they pulled out over the next three days. If net outflows continue, then $80,000 won’t just be support—it’ll be a turning point for the trend 📉
