U.S. Inflation at 3.7%: Gasoline Makes the Difference

The BLS released the September 2026 CPI on October 14. The headline index rose 0.6% month over month and 3.7% year over year, up from 3.4% annually in August. These are prices from the previous month, even though the report was released this week.

Gasoline rose 9.1% for the month and accounted for more than half of the overall monthly increase. Energy rose 5.2%, housing 0.4%, and food prices were unchanged. The monthly changes cited are seasonally adjusted.

Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.3% month over month—the same pace as in August. Its annual rate went from 2.4% to 2.6%. The reading has two components: strong energy pressures and a core measure maintaining its monthly pace, even as it rises in the year-over-year comparison.

To interpret the data, it helps to distinguish between measures. The Fed’s 2% inflation target refers to the PCE index. The central bank also monitors CPI and other indicators, and assesses whether changes are likely to persist. This report alone does not confirm a specific number of future rate hikes.

Market snapshot: at 05:41 UTC on October 15, Binance spot showed BTC at 81,114 USDT (-2.96% in 24 hours) and ETH at 2,363.79 USDT (-5.71%). This snapshot does not allow the entire decline to be attributed to CPI. The risk is mistaking one macroeconomic reading for a certain trajectory: expectations can change with new data.
