$1 Billion in Leverage Wiped Out Overnight: Bitcoin Wasn't the Hardest Hit—Ethereum Was 🦖

💥 ⏰ 消息群里第一时间说

Over the past 24 hours, about $483 million worth of Bitcoin and Ethereum futures contracts were liquidated. Ethereum alone accounted for roughly $286 million, while Bitcoin saw only about $197 million. Ethereum fell 6.4% in 24 hours to $2,356, while Bitcoin dropped 3.2% to around $81,000. XRP and SOL fell about 5%, and Dogecoin dropped around 6%.

Here's the contrast: Ethereum has about $30 billion in open interest, compared with Bitcoin's $52 billion. Its market is only about 60% the size, yet the amount liquidated was half again as much. 💥

My take is that this shows Ethereum longs are more crowded and their leverage more fragile. Once the price breaks key levels, a cascade of liquidations can drive it even lower. Liquidations don't care whether you want to sell; they only care whether you have enough margin. If someone uses $1,000 to control a $10,000 position, a move of less than 10% in the wrong direction can wipe out their principal.

The trigger was still the Fed. After Wednesday's CPI came in hotter than expected, the market's implied probability of a rate hike in October briefly surged to nearly 50%, before retreating again. Risk appetite faded across the board, and Asian stocks plunged in tandem: South Korea's KOSPI fell 8% intraday, and the Nikkei 225 dropped 5%. Crypto was just one of the markets dragged down with them. 📉

Put simply, this isn't a Bitcoin story—it's a leverage story. Leverage magnifies gains when prices rise, and magnifies losses when they fall. The more crowded the leverage on one side, the harder that side gets hit.

One thing to watch: Ethereum's price is now hovering around $2,350. If more of those $30 billion in contracts are liquidated, the next wave of liquidations could be triggered at even lower prices. To see a real signal that the sell-off is ending, watch for open interest to shrink—not just for the price to bounce a few percentage points. ⚠️

Do you think Ethereum's been dragged down by leverage, or was a pullback overdue anyway? Let me know in the comments.
