Korea’s KOSPI bloodbath triggers a sidecar! Semiconductor giants plunge one after another, and a crypto liquidity crisis may be just around the corner
When program-driven selling is forcibly put on pause, the market’s true panic is only just beginning to bare its teeth.
On October 15, the Korea Exchange activated its sidecar mechanism for the KOSPI index, suspending program trading sell orders.
The index plunged more than 5% right at the open, fell below 6,000 points, and lost as much as 5.59% intraday. SK Hynix fell more than 7%, while Samsung Electronics dropped over 6%, making heavyweight semiconductor stocks the main driver of the decline.
In my view, this is by no means an isolated event confined to South Korea. It is a clear signal that global risk assets are being repriced. The premium on technology and semiconductor stocks, fueled by the AI narrative, is now undergoing a sharp unwind under the dual pressure of tightening liquidity and downward revisions to earnings expectations.
While the sidecar mechanism can temporarily curb program-driven selling, it cannot change the underlying direction of capital flows. For the crypto market, this looks more like an early dress rehearsal: as highly valued assets in traditional markets begin to tumble in a chain reaction, can crypto assets’ liquidity premium really last?
Can your current positions really withstand the next wave of cross-market volatility?
