Anthropic brought in $16.8 billion in revenue in the first quarter, and Wall Street is getting ready to sell it to investors at a $2 trillion valuation.

Claude’s growth really is staggering: $4.7 billion in revenue in the first quarter, $11.6 billion in the second, and a whopping $16.8 billion in the third—a 45% increase quarter over quarter.

But one number should give us pause: annualized revenue based on its latest quarter comes to $67.2 billion. At a $2 trillion valuation, that’s nearly 30 times sales.

Even more incredible, Anthropic brought in $4.6 billion in revenue last year but lost more than $8 billion. It’s now announced that it has achieved adjusted profitability, but we’ll have to wait for the full financial statements to see exactly what was adjusted out.

Of course I believe AI will change the world, and I believe Anthropic can keep growing.

But a great company can still be a terrible investment.

The AI revolution could be real, and so could the bubble. Those two things have never been mutually exclusive. What do you think?
