The stablecoin market tops $300 billion—so why did $CRCL fall instead?

Stablecoins may be one of the crypto industry’s most promising areas to watch over the next few years. But CRCL’s share price is telling the market something else: industry growth doesn’t mean every participant will make money.

So far, the global stablecoin market has surpassed $306 billion. Yet Circle, one of the leading stablecoin companies, saw its stock plunge more than 8% today, falling below $78 after hours.

On September 16, Circle’s Arc blockchain officially went live. This comes amid developments in regulation, institutional partnerships, and infrastructure.
On September 22, Binance announced a $100 million investment in Circle and renewed its five-year strategic partnership, with a focus on expanding USDC’s use in global markets.

In the second quarter, the amount of USDC in circulation grew 19% year over year to $73.3 billion, but revenue increased by just 7%. The vast majority of it still came from interest earned on reserve assets.

There’s plenty of good news, but the market isn’t buying it. Put simply, Circle’s current business model still relies heavily on earning interest from USDC reserves.

If U.S. Treasury yields fall, profit margins could come under pressure. Circle also has to pay substantial distribution fees to channel partners. The stablecoin industry is expanding, but Circle isn’t capturing all of that growth.

As the U.S. regulatory framework for stablecoins gradually takes shape, banks and payment companies will also accelerate their entry into the market. Regulation is both a moat for Circle and a potential ticket in for more competitors.

Still, I remain optimistic about the stablecoin sector’s growth potential over the next few years.

What’s truly exciting isn’t just USDC and USDT on exchanges, but cross-border payments, tokenized assets, global dollar settlements, and even automated payments between AI agents.
Once these applications reach scale, stablecoins will no longer be merely trading tools for the crypto market; they could become part of the global financial infrastructure.

CRCL is still worth watching over the long term, but for now, the industry’s prospects shouldn’t be equated directly with a rising share price.

The big opportunity in stablecoins may still lie ahead, so I’m restarting my dollar-cost averaging investments for the medium to long term!
