Over the past 60 trading days, $IREN had a daily correlation of just 0.27 with Bitcoin, but a whopping 0.79 with $CRWV . In the first 15 minutes of trading tonight, it fell 7.8%, while Bitcoin was down just 0.3% over the same period. That really brought the difference into focus.

The trigger came from CoreWeave. It announced plans to issue up to 35 million additional shares, along with $3 billion in convertible notes due 2033, and the stock plunged 13% right at the open. A share offering means that whenever the stock tries to move higher, a batch of new shares is waiting overhead, ready to be sold. When convertible notes are issued, arbitrage buyers typically short the common stock at the same time to hedge, creating selling pressure in large batches.

So what does this have to do with IREN? Institutions have long stopped treating IREN as a mining stock; they put it in the same AI computing-power basket as CRWV and NBIS. When the biggest stock in that basket gets hit with financing-related bad news, funds reduce exposure to the whole basket. IREN gets sold along with it, and NBIS also fell 9% tonight.

The comparison is telling. MARA, which carries the same miner label, still had a 60-day correlation of 0.55 with Bitcoin and fell just 3% today. Looking at the bigger picture, from September 22 to now, IREN has fallen from 48.55 to 32.07, a 34% drawdown, while Bitcoin is down just 3.9% over the same period. To be fair, its correlation with Bitcoin has returned to 0.60 over the past 20 days, so I’m not saying it’s completely decoupled from crypto. But on a day when CRWV is the one in trouble, it’s clear which side IREN is on.

Technically, the daily RSI is at 28.6, in oversold territory. The lower Bollinger Band is at 31.84, and the intraday low was 31.93—almost touching the band. The EMA12 is at 37.51, still 17% above the current price. The first resistance above is yesterday’s close at 34.80; below, there’s the July 29 low of 28.93, after which the stock bounced back to 38.26 the very next day.

My view is that IREN is currently trading on CoreWeave’s financing costs, not Bitcoin mining power. Oversold or not, until the pricing of CRWV’s share offering and convertible notes is finalized, I’ll treat any IREN rebound as a sympathy rally. I wouldn’t touch it unless it can reclaim 34.80. What would genuinely change my view is a day when CRWV keeps falling but IREN doesn’t. Personal opinion for the record.
