The price climbed from around $0.13 to $0.1621, while 24-hour trading volume jumped 128% to $226 million.
Two things happened at the same time, and they’re worth taking in order:
First: Unichain is migrating to OP Enterprise.
On October 9, Uniswap Labs announced that Unichain would hand over production operations to Optimism—the entire infrastructure stack, including the sequencer, RPC services, monitoring, and incident response.
On October 13, the Unichain testnet completed its migration. The mainnet will follow on October 29.
The significance is that Unichain will no longer maintain its own production infrastructure and can focus on building its product. Optimism becomes an “infrastructure provider” for the Superchain, serving more chains. With Unichain joining the Superchain, its sequencer revenue will also flow to Optimism—directly replenishing OP’s buyback fund.
Second: The buyback mechanism is already in action.
Governance approved it in January 2026, and implementation began in February: every month, 50% of the Superchain’s net sequencer revenue is used to buy OP tokens on the open market. The OP bought back goes into the Optimism Collective treasury.
Superchain members include Base (Coinbase), Unichain (Uniswap), World Chain, Soneium (Sony), Ink, OP Mainnet, and others. A portion of these chains’ sequencer revenue flows back to Optimism under the protocol.
Put simply: the more the Superchain is used, the more money flows into buybacks, and the more OP gets bought off the market.
One of the biggest criticisms of OP used to be that it was just a governance token—holding it didn’t let you do anything besides vote. The buyback mechanism changes that equation: Superchain growth now generates real market demand.
The bad news:
OP is now down 68% from a year ago and 97% from its all-time high. Token unlocks will continue to create pressure through 2027, so selling pressure remains. Whether buybacks can offset the unlocks will depend on the Superchain’s actual revenue.
The Unichain mainnet migration is scheduled for October 29. That’s the next milestone to watch.
