Today (October 14) at 8:30 a.m. ET, the U.S. September CPI will be officially released.
This is the last inflation report before the Fed’s October 28 rate-setting meeting.
First, let’s lay out the forecasts:
Market consensus: CPI up 3.6% year over year (August: 3.4%)
Month over month: +0.6% (August: +0.4%)
Core CPI year over year: 2.4%–2.5% (August: 2.4%)
Core CPI month over month: +0.2% (August: +0.3%)
If the numbers come in as expected, the headline will be “inflation is picking up”—but core inflation is slowing.
Why energy is the key variable this time:
Brent crude rose 14% in September alone, and was up about 42% for the third quarter. The average price of gasoline climbed from $4.16 to $4.47 over the course of September. This is an energy-driven headline spike, not a sign of stronger demand.
Markets on the day before the CPI release (October 13):
10-year Treasury yield: 5.19%–5.22% (edged down slightly after Fed official Williams spoke)
WTI crude: $92.51, down 1.3% on the day (concerns about Middle East supply eased somewhat)
BTC: $83,315, up slightly by 0.47%
Three scenarios:
① In line with expectations (around 3.6%) — already priced in by the market; a muted reaction, BTC remains range-bound, Treasury yields are largely unchanged, and the odds of an October rate hike stay around 22%.
② Higher than expected (3.8%+) — a signal that energy costs are feeding through to core inflation; the odds of an October rate hike rise sharply, Treasury yields rebound, BTC comes under pressure, and the $80,000 support level is tested again.
③ Lower than expected (below 3.4%) — a surprise for the market; Treasury yields fall, and BTC could break through the $84,000–$85,000 resistance zone.
Right now, the options market is pricing today’s CPI release as close to a “non-event”—7-day ATM implied volatility is 32%, even lower than last week.
But history suggests that when the market prices CPI as “boring,” even a 0.2 percentage-point surprise can often trigger an outsized price reaction.
With such a large increase in energy prices in September, upside risks can’t be ignored.
