Uniswap is handing over operation of its own L2, Unichain, to Optimism, and $OP has also surged onto the trending list over the past couple of days.
OP is Optimism’s governance token. Optimism develops the OP Stack, an open-source foundation used by many Ethereum L2s. Base and Unichain are both built on it.
In a post published on the evening of 10/9 Beijing time, Uniswap said Unichain would move to OP Enterprise, a paid service through which Optimism operates chains for other teams. The timeline is to move the testnet first on 10/13, followed by the mainnet on 10/29.
After the move, Optimism will take charge of the sequencer, RPC nodes, monitoring, and incident response. Nothing will change for users: the chain ID, contracts, balances, and deployments of all Uniswap versions will stay the same, and no action is needed.
They said this move lays the groundwork for native interoperability. Once the feature goes live, assets such as ETH will be able to move directly between OP Stack chains without going through a cross-chain bridge.
For context, the Optimism Foundation said early this year that its focus this year would be helping businesses move their operations onchain. After Base switched to its own tech stack in February, it also remained an OP Enterprise customer.
The token-related matters should be considered separately. This year, OP governance approved a buyback using half of the Superchain revenue share to purchase OP. Optimism’s official account said in a reply on the governance forum that OP Enterprise revenue goes to the Foundation and is not currently included in the buyback; whether to include it in the future is still under consideration.
