Bitcoin rose 1.43% to $83,300, Ethereum rose 1.48%, SOL rose 0.62%, and BNB rose 0.74%. Some of yesterday’s sharp losses were recovered today. But this wasn’t a broad-based rebound: of the eight sectors, only L2 scaling showed a clear direction. The other five had gainers accounting for 60% to 70%, while two sectors were in the red.
L2 scaling had a median gain of 5.29%, with 80% of tokens rising, making it the only sector with a convincing showing today. OP rose 21.6%, ZK rose 11.0%, and ARB rose 5.3%. The sector’s median fell 8.98% yesterday, with breadth dropping to zero, but it rebounded today—making it the most volatile of the eight sectors.
The largest sector by weight, L1 public chains, saw $1.58 billion in trading volume, with 65% of tokens rising, but its median gain was just 0.61%. STX rose 5.0% and APT rose 4.2%, but the median was held back, suggesting the gains came from a handful of tokens rather than the sector as a whole.
Payment and settlement fell 0.41% at the median, with 33% of tokens rising, making it one of today’s weakest sectors. Only BCH and XRP rose among its six constituents. Oracles and cross-chain fell 1.24% at the median, with breadth at 44%; LINK rose just 1.0%. These two sectors failed to join today’s recovery after yesterday’s steep losses.
DeFi rose 1.14% at the median, with 68% of tokens rising. GMX gained 7.3%, LDO 7.0%, and UNI 6.8%, making it one of the sectors where at least three tokens rose in tandem. Meme tokens rose 0.65% at the median, led by PEPE, up 6.1%.
My view is straightforward: today was a recovery, not a reversal. Of the eight sectors, only L2 scaling had breadth of 80%; all the others were below 70%, and payment and settlement and oracles and cross-chain were still falling. I’m watching to see whether breadth can rise above 70%, not how much the index gains.
