Don’t chase the rally or try to catch the bottom—wait for a signal.

One CBDC bites the dust, and $BTC is up just 1.43%.

On October 13, a spokesperson for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand officially announced that all research and development on its digital cash (CBDC) proposal would be suspended. The project, originally scheduled to launch in 2030, has been shelved, with the focus shifting to modernizing the payment system and developing real-time retail payment solutions. Even more thought-provoking are the consultation figures they released: 65% of New Zealanders believe digital cash offers no benefits at all.
The twist is here. The market’s first reaction is, “Another country rejects CBDCs—bullish for BTC.” But the data doesn’t support this feel-good narrative. If this were a narrative-level catalyst, the price wouldn’t have responded with just a 1.43% move. BTC is currently at 83,287.99, with a 24-hour high of 84,168.00 and a low of 81,033.66. Its range is just 3.87%—a typical low-volume sideways range, not a news-driven breakout pattern.
What deserves closer attention is New Zealand’s wording: “real-time retail payment solutions.” They rejected neither the idea of “digital payments” nor that direction; they rejected the specific model of “a central bank directly issuing a retail digital currency to the public.” The market is conflating these two things, and that’s the biggest misconception right now. Historically, New Zealand has always taken a relatively cautious stance toward crypto assets.
