IBKR adds Ethereum staking: scope and risks of the new service
On October 13, 2026, Interactive Brokers announced the launch of ETH staking for eligible Interactive Brokers LLC clients. The service is provided by zerohash; availability depends on the subsidiary and country of residence.
Staking involves committing cryptocurrency to support the security and validation of a proof-of-stake network. Participants may receive rewards for their contribution.
At launch, ETH is the supported asset. From the Client Portal’s Staking Dashboard, users can request staking deposits and withdrawals and view pending transactions. Rewards, when earned, are added to the staked balance and may compound while the position remains staked.
What conditions matter? Rewards are variable and not guaranteed; fees reduce the amount received. Committed assets are unavailable for sale or transfer until the staking withdrawal is complete, and the timeframe is not guaranteed. There is also a risk of validator penalties, known as slashing.
Integration into the broker’s platform does not mean that IBKR has custody: crypto assets are held by the external provider and are not covered by SIPC protection. In addition, receiving more ETH does not prevent losses if its price falls.
Market perspective: this expands access to staking through a traditional broker, but the announcement does not quantify any new capital inflows. On Binance, at 21:08 UTC on October 13, ETH was trading at 2,509.78 USDT (−0.10% over 24 hours) and BTC at 83,403.69 USDT (+0.59%). This snapshot does not demonstrate a reaction caused by the news.
