Let’s take a look at one of the most significant investment trends emerging in the US economy right now: the massive increase in spending on information technology, software, and computing equipment.

Private fixed investment in information processing equipment and software has now reached a record 5.05% of US GDP. That’s an increase of 1.08 percentage points since the third quarter of 2023, showing just how rapidly businesses are increasing their investment in technology.

In dollar terms, annualized investment has climbed by $531 billion, reaching a record $1.65 trillion.

Now, here’s an important historical comparison. The previous peak was 4.46% of GDP, recorded in the fourth quarter of 2000, just before the US entered the 2001 recession. Today’s investment share has moved well beyond that previous record.

And perhaps the most remarkable part is the long-term trend. Since the first quarter of 2018, investment in information processing equipment and software has more than doubled.

A major driver behind this acceleration is the unprecedented spending boom surrounding artificial intelligence. Companies are investing heavily in computing infrastructure, advanced chips, data centers, and the software needed to support AI development and deployment.

For investors and traders, this is an important trend to monitor because it highlights how AI is becoming a major force behind corporate investment and economic activity in the United States.

The key question going forward is whether these enormous investments will translate into enough productivity gains, revenue growth, and profits to justify the spending.

Because ultimately, the real test of the AI boom will not be how much money companies invest, but how much economic value that investment generates.
