Digital cash is on hold for now
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand said today
its digital cash plan is being put on the back burner
as it shifts its focus to upgrading the payments system
and introducing real-time retail payments
Note: this is not a rejection
Officials say they’ll modernize the infrastructure first
so it can support digital currencies in the future
Put simply,
get the foundations in place first
then decide whether to issue it
Countries are slowing down, not rushing ahead
I’ll keep this in mind as background
but won’t take it as a signal to act yet
