Aave has started lending against U.S. stocks as collateral, and I think this is more worth paying attention to than simply bringing assets on-chain.

I’ve been following the development of Aave V4 lately.

Previously, many RWA projects mainly focused on bringing assets like stocks and Treasury bonds onto the blockchain.

But I’ve always felt that putting assets on-chain is only the first step.

If all you do is hold them somewhere else, the new value actually created may be fairly limited.

Aave V4 now supports using tokenized U.S. stocks such as Apple, Nvidia, and Tesla as collateral to borrow USDC.

I saw a report yesterday saying that about 17 days after launch, roughly $4.9 million worth of tokenized U.S. stocks had been deposited as collateral.

The scale is still small, and this is only the value of the collateral—it doesn’t mean an equivalent amount has been borrowed.

Still, I think this is a direction worth continuing to watch.

That’s because it’s starting to bring traditional financial assets into actual DeFi lending scenarios, rather than just letting them trade on-chain.

Of course, when it comes to the AAVE token, we still need to watch actual borrowing demand, protocol revenue, and ultimately how much value is passed on to the token.

I increasingly feel that the real opportunity in RWAs may not just be tokenizing assets, but what new financial demand these assets can create once they’re on-chain.
