The Man Who Lost $1.4 Billion 🔥
Total chaos... that no one saw coming.
Everyone talks about those who make huge sums of money, but today we’re looking at the other side of the coin: “the loss.”
In the 1990s, Nick Leeson was a young, brilliant star trader at the Singapore branch of Barings Bank, a British financial institution with more than 200 years of history (its clients included none other than the Queen of England).
🔥Incredibly, Leeson began making highly speculative bets on Japan’s futures market. At first, he made a lot of money, but when the market turned against him, instead of accepting the loss, he created a secret error account (the famous 88888 account) to hide the losses from his bosses in London.
To recoup his losses, he secretly doubled the size of his bets—a strategy known as the martingale. The final disaster came in 1995, after an unexpected earthquake in Kobe, Japan, sent the markets plunging. Leeson could no longer keep up the lie and fled the country, leaving a note that said:
“I’m sorry.” He caused losses of more than $1.4 billion, leading to the immediate and historic collapse of Barings Bank. He was eventually arrested in Frankfurt and spent several years in prison.
