Bitcoin fell 2.22% to $81,800, Ethereum fell 3.40%, SOL fell 5.04%, and BNB fell 2.76%. The three-day rally ended today. All eight sectors had negative median returns, and the highest share of advancing tokens was just 20%; three sectors had none.
The L2 scaling and payments and settlement sectors, which had both maintained 100% breadth for three straight days, saw their share of advancing tokens drop to zero today. L2 scaling had the worst median return of the eight sectors, falling 8.98%, with POL down 5.3%, OP down 8.8%, and ZK down 9.0%. Payments and settlement fell a median 5.79%, with XRP down 4.9%, ALGO down 5.3%, and LTC down 5.5%. Not one of its six constituents rose.
Trading volume increased. L1 chains went from $1.07 billion yesterday to $1.54 billion, while the share of advancing tokens plunged from 74% to 9%. Of the 23 constituents, only STX and TON rose. Rising volume during a decline suggests active selling, not a lack of interest.
AI fell a median 8.01%, privacy fell 8.72%, and Meme fell 7.15%; not one of the ten constituents rose. The only sectors among the eight with any individual gainers were privacy and AI, buoyed by XMR's 4.8% rise and RENDER's 3.2% rise. But with only one or two gainers each, they don't indicate a broader trend.
The only tokens still rising on the leaderboard were GTC, up 51.72%, and RSR, up 31.27%. GTC's move was driven by news of its listing on South Korea's Upbit. I couldn't find any news behind RSR's move. Neither has anything to do with its sector.
My view is straightforward: today's move ended the three-day broad-based rally all at once. The first two sectors went straight from 100% breadth to zero, with no transition. In this kind of market, I'm not looking for a bounce. First, I'll watch to see whether trading volume contracts, and whether any sector can regain majority breadth tomorrow.
