In 2014, Dogecoin miners made a decision: merge-mine with Litecoin. With the same hash power, they could mine $LTC and also mine $DOGE along the way. This meant the small chain, with its roughly one-minute block time, didn’t have to support an entire network of hash power on its own. The trade-off was that the two chains have been tied together ever since: when Litecoin’s hash power fluctuates, Dogecoin can’t avoid the effects either. Litecoin has a cap of 84 million coins, while Dogecoin has no cap and adds about 5.256 billion coins each year at a fixed rate. They share the rewards and bear the risks together.
