📰 Just said BTC was holding at 82.5K—and now things have suddenly changed on the eve of the CPI report?

Just a couple of days ago, we said Bitcoin had held steady around $82,500. Now, with the US CPI report due out any minute, there’s suddenly a new take on the situation. In simple terms, Bitcoin is hovering right around $82,500—a crucial level because it could determine whether Bitcoin keeps falling if the CPI figures come in poorly. For miners and traders who are sitting on the sidelines, this price level could directly affect whether they add to their positions or get out.

Why does this news matter?
This news matters because it reveals the final tug-of-war in market sentiment ahead of a key data release. For the market right now, $82,500 is like the last multiple-choice question before an exam: get it right and you can enter the exam room; get it wrong and you might fail outright. More broadly, this reflects a deep divide in market expectations about Fed policy. Some believe inflation will ease and the Fed will loosen its stance, so they’re willing to build positions around 82.5K. Others think CPI could come in hotter than expected, so they’re waiting on the sidelines. This means the market’s view of the Fed has shifted from “completely bearish” to “conditionally bearish.” That uncertainty alone could increase volatility.

Market impact
In the short term, if CPI comes in below expectations, $82,500 could become a support level, and Bitcoin may at least hold above it for now. But if the data comes in above expectations, Bitcoin could turn sharply lower. For short-term traders, this price level is an “emotional dividing line” worth watching closely. Historically, Bitcoin has tended to move sideways hesitantly ahead of Fed announcements. For example, before the 75-basis-point rate hike in December 2022, Bitcoin also traded sideways around $8,000 for roughly two weeks. The difference this time is that Bitcoin has already climbed above $83,000, so if it falls back, the potential pullback could be larger than last time.

Trading approach
💡 My view is neutral to bearish, assuming the CPI data is “neutral.” If the data comes in above expectations, the 82.5K support level could fail, and Bitcoin could fall to around $80,000. But if the data comes in below expectations, Bitcoin could continue rising to $85,000. Invalidation: If the Fed announces a 25-basis-point rate cut, this view no longer applies.
