Guys, a pretty scary vulnerability was recently discovered in the XRP Ledger.
The vulnerability had been hiding in the payment engine since 2015. Due to an arithmetic overflow issue, an attacker could theoretically create new XRP out of thin air with just a few hundred XRP worth of reserve funds!
Keep in mind, if this kind of vulnerability were exploited on a large scale, the impact would be felt across the entire XRP supply and market confidence.
But what really makes me optimistic this time is how quickly the XRPL team handled the issue.
Normally, major protocol changes on XRPL require a validator vote, with support above 80% sustained for two weeks before they can officially take effect.
But this time, the team went straight to an emergency fix.
Once nodes upgrade to version 3.4.1, the fix takes effect immediately!
According to the official announcement, this is the first time in the more than ten years since the amendment mechanism was introduced that it has been used to urgently fix a vulnerability this way.
Even more importantly, over 80% of the validators on the default list had upgraded on the day the update was released—even though the complete source code for the fix had not yet been made public.
With a vulnerability of this severity, disclosing the details too early could give attackers a chance to study and exploit it.
I think this incident could cause some short-term panic, but in the long run, eliminating the risk of potential unauthorized XRP issuance helps restore confidence in the security of the XRP network.
So I’m bullish on $XRP . This fix should be seen as the removal of a major security threat!
