How many bitcoins does Satoshi Nakamoto actually have? And why does the number of bitcoins in his wallet keep growing?

I just checked Satoshi Nakamoto's wallet address: it holds 1.09 million bitcoins, $BTC . At the current price of $82,880, that's worth $90.8 billion.

And looking at the wallet activity, people keep sending bitcoins to his wallet every day, causing the number of bitcoins in it to keep growing.

The most eye-catching transaction in the past two years was someone sending 26.9 BTC directly to the wallet. The amount was so large that the entire crypto world went wild.

CB's Head of Product Strategy, Conor Grogan, posted a line that was shared like crazy:
“Either Satoshi woke up and bought 27 bitcoins to put in his wallet, or someone just burned a million dollars.”

Why do people send money to Satoshi's address?

First, as a tribute. This is Bitcoin's genesis address, and some people treat it like a “wishing well.”

Second, to mark it. On-chain analysts use this method to mark Satoshi's address.

Third, just for fun. Some people simply want to be able to say they're “someone who sent money to Satoshi.”

I am Satoshi Nakamoto. Everyone is Satoshi Nakamoto. Next time, remember to send it straight to me.
