Ontology’s mainnet, $ONT , stopped producing blocks. The official team explained why early this morning Beijing time.

ONT is Ontology’s native token. You can stake it with a node to participate in consensus and earn ONG, which is used to pay transaction fees on the chain.

They said they received an emergency report that a project in the ecosystem might have a security risk that could affect assets on the network. So they coordinated with most consensus nodes to temporarily halt block production to facilitate an investigation.

In other words, the chain didn’t go down on its own this time—the nodes agreed to stop it. The downside is that the entire chain stopped, so even transfers unrelated to that project are stuck.

The official team hasn’t said which project or what the risk is. They only said the investigation is ongoing, and block production will resume once they’ve investigated sufficiently and confirmed it’s safe.

The latest block shown on the block explorer is still from last night, Beijing time. No new blocks have been produced since.

At the end of August, Ontology had to urgently halt its mainnet after a malicious attack. It resumed after nodes upgraded to a new version. This time, it halted again after a project in its ecosystem was reported to have a risk.

Upbit has also paused deposits and withdrawals for ONT, ONG, and MBL.
