People often call ETFs the “ballast” for institutional money, but October isn’t even halfway over and spot BTC and ETH ETFs have already seen combined net outflows of more than $1 billion.

What happened:
1. On Wednesday alone, BTC ETFs saw net outflows of about $485 million, their largest single-day outflow since June 25.
2. On Thursday, BTC saw another $244 million flow out, while ETH ETFs logged their eighth consecutive day of outflows.
3. On Friday, BTC ETFs saw $21 million flow back in, while ETH ETFs extended their losing streak to nine days, with total outflows of about $641 million over that period.

The issuer breakdown is even more interesting: Fidelity’s FBTC saw $380 million in outflows for the week, and ARKB saw $207 million out. BlackRock’s IBIT was almost flat for the week (+$1.1 million)—it saw $122 million in net inflows on Tuesday, then $208 million flow out the very next day.

Price action: BTC briefly fell to $80,427 on Thursday, then recovered to around $82,900 by Saturday morning. ETH was near $2,506.

The takeaway:
Institutional money isn’t driven by faith; it’s a business. ETFs give big money a “one-click in and out” door: inflows can be quick, but outflows can be even quicker. Money came in Tuesday and went out Wednesday—that suggests this isn’t a one-way retreat, but more likely a repositioning amid macro volatility. What really matters isn’t the total outflow, but the breakdown: IBIT barely moved, while money left FBTC and ARKB. The biggest player is still in the game.
For everyday investors, ETF flows are a sentiment thermometer, not a steering wheel. Glassnode has also cautioned that to confirm this rebound has real support, we need to see whether spot trading volume can keep up.
