Prediction platform Kalshi faces fresh insider trading suspicions; investigation focuses on bets on White House press secretary pick

Oct. 10 — According to market sources, prediction platform Kalshi is investigating a batch of suspicious bets suspected of involving insider trading. The wagers accurately predicted that Katie Zacharia would become Trump's new White House press secretary.

A Kalshi spokesperson confirmed to the media that the investigation is underway but did not disclose further details. As the platform began its review, the White House officially announced that Zacharia would replace departing press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Notably, this is not the first time Kalshi has been embroiled in controversy over public officials trading on inside information. In July this year, a White House teleprompter operator was fired over allegations of using their position to bet on the content of a Trump speech on Kalshi.

Taken together, these two consecutive cases of alleged insider betting involving public officials—from a teleprompter operator to a personnel appointment—also expose significant weaknesses in event prediction markets' controls against insider information.

This serves as a warning to market participants: for contracts settled according to the outcomes of real-world events, the introduction of insider information into the market directly undermines trading fairness and raises concerns about prediction platforms' ability to control the use of such information.
