BlockBeats News, October 10: Former FTX COO Constance Wang posted on Friday criticizing Netflix’s upcoming FTX-themed series (The Altruists), saying that watching the trailer made her “physically sick.” She said the show’s portrayal of FTX’s collapse, its founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), and former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison was seriously at odds with her own experience.
Wang said that FTX had fewer than 200 employees at the time, many of whom worked 16 to 18 hours a day and had almost no time to sleep. She also pushed back against the narrative that FTX’s collapse was caused by executives indulging in parties in the Bahamas, saying that what she saw while working at the company was nothing like that. She added that the trailer’s portrayal of Ellison was overly aggressive, saying that in real life Ellison was quiet and gentle, and that most employees did not know she was dating SBF until after FTX went bankrupt.
Wang joined FTX as COO in early 2019 and was promoted to co-CEO just months before the company collapsed. She said the FTX collapse ruined many people’s lives, while Netflix turned the tragedy into a love story, calling it “shameful.” (The Altruists) has 8 episodes and is set to premiere on Netflix on November 19.
