Dormant supply reactivation is one of the most underrated late-cycle signals in crypto — and right now it deserves attention.

When wallets that have been silent for 1–3 years start moving coins, it typically means one of two things: long-term holders are distributing into strength, or early accumulators are repositioning ahead of a perceived regime change. Neither interpretation is bullish in the short term.

For $BTC, dormant supply metrics are well-tracked. But the same dynamic plays out across major altcoins — often with a meaningful lag behind Bitcoin, which makes them useful as confirmation signals rather than leading ones.

Historically, dormancy spikes tied to major protocol upgrades are expected and tolerated by the market. When supply reactivates without a clear catalyst, it warrants caution. Regulatory milestones, exchange listings, and ecosystem surges all create their own dormancy-reactivation patterns.

The key insight: dormant supply moving is not inherently bearish — it depends on where those coins go. Coins flowing to exchanges signal distribution. Coins staying off-exchange signal restaking or repositioning.

Watch the destination, not just the movement. Late cycle or early cycle, that distinction tells you everything about whether smart money is exiting or simply rotating.
